Hornets aren’t a frequent pest in the UK. However, they can cause issues in some areas, and their large size and strong sting makes them dangerous to humans, particularly when they are present in large numbers.
Hornets can be tough to differentiate from wasps. The most noticeable indication is that hornets are social and live in large nests while wasps have a tendency to be solitary. This means that if you find a large number of the insects, they could be hornets. Small numbers of hornets can be managed on a DIY basis using spray insecticide carefully. However, this is dangerous due to the sting of the hornet. Hornets can sting several times without dying and their stings can cause allergic reactions in many people. These stings can be lethal in extreme cases.
For severe infestations or in situations where the nest is inaccessible the services of a specialist pest control company should be sought. These companies have access to professional quality insecticides which are very effective on hornets. These insecticides may be delivered either by spray, a liquid application or in dust form. All of these methods will leave some residual effect which means that any hornets that were not present during the first application will be killed when they come back to the nest. Pest control companies will also be able to eliminate the nest, which will stop hornets attempting to recolonise it.

Catterick Garrison is a significant garrison and town situated 3 miles south of Richmond in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The town lies in the Central Richmondshire electoral division of North Yorkshire County Council and divided between the Hipswell and Scotton wards of Richmondshire District Council. The town is divided in between two civil parishes. The southern part of the town, south of a little stream called Leadmill Gill, is within the civil parish of Scotton. The northern part forms the greater part of the civil parish of Hipswell. Every parish has its own parish council. It is the biggest British Army garrison in the world, with a population of around 13000 and measuring more than 2400 acres. The original intention for Catterick was to be a short-term camp to accommodate two comprehensive divisions with around 40000 men in 2000 huts. However, under plans announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2005, the population of Catterick Garrison is expected to grow to over 25000 by 2020, making it the largest population centre in the local area. Lacking a true town centre, the Garrison gained its 1st big supermarket in 2000, as well as a retail park referred to as ‘Richmondshire Walk’, which also contains a McDonalds, a Poundstretcher plus a Peacocks, among other shops. ‘Catterick Leisure Centre’ is a purpose built complex opposite the retail park, opened in July 2009, and it offers a broad spectrum of leisure and fitness facilities such as a swimming pool, and a fitness centre, and also an adjoining public library.
