Hornets aren’t a common pest in the UK. However, they can cause problems in a few locations, and their substantial size and strong sting makes them harmful to humans, especially if they are present in large numbers.
Hornets can be difficult to distinguish from wasps. The most noticeable signal is the fact that hornets are social and live in large nests while wasps have a tendency to be solitary. This means that if you see a large number of the insects, they are often hornets. Small numbers of hornets can be controlled on a DIY basis using spray insecticide with care. However, this is dangerous due to the sting of the hornet. Hornets can sting multiple times without dying and their stings can cause allergic reactions in some people. These stings can be fatal in rare cases.
For large infestations or in situations where the nest is inaccessible the services of an experienced pest control company should be sought. These companies have access to professional quality insecticides which are extremely effective on hornets. These insecticides may be delivered either by spray, a liquid application or in dust form. All of these methods will leave some residual effect meaning any hornets which were not present at the time of the first application will be eliminated when they come back to the nest. Pest control companies will also be able to eliminate the nest, which will stop hornets trying to recolonise it.

Buxton is a spa town within Derbyshire. Due to its location on the edge of the county boundary, with Cheshire to the west and Staffordshire to the south, Buxton is often known as ‘The Gateway to the Peak District National Park’. Initially a municipal borough, Buxton joined other locations in 1974 to create the local government district and borough of High Peak in the county of Derbyshire. Being 300 metres above sea level, Buxton is thought to be England’s highest market town. This height means that the town is usually cooler than nearby places, with the daytime temperature being about two degrees Celsius lower than the temperature in Manchester. Found on the River Wye and overlooked by Axe Edge Moor, Buxton is traditionally a spa town because of the geothermal spring that rises at a continuous temperature of 28 degrees C. The water from the spring flows to St. Ann’s Well by way of a pipe system which is located opposite the Crescent in close proximity to the centre of Buxton. Buxton reached considerable popularity when the spa was recommended by Erasmus Darwin to Josiah Wedgwood in the later half of the 19th century. The water from the geothermal spring is also bottled and sold on an international scale by Buxton Mineral Water Company. In accordance with the 2011 Census, the permanent resident population of the town is about 22,000. The town has witnessed continued expansion since the coming of the railway in 1863. There’s also a fairly substantial student population, with the Devonshire Campus of the University of Derby being in one of Buxton’s historic buildings.
