Fumigation is a technique used to handle serious pest infestations. It can be disruptive to homes and businesses so is commonly only used as a final resort where an infestation is especially prolonged and other ways of control have been ineffective. Fumigation is effective at controlling a number of pests, it is commonly used for fleas, cockroaches and other crawling or flying insects.
Fumigation functions by sealing a building or room and then using an aerosol or fogger to spray the area with poison fumes. This heavily saturates the area with a toxic gas that kills the pests inside. For smaller areas, the room can be covered at entrances such as windows and doors and then sprayed. For larger buildings, the building will either be sealed or wrapped in a tent to ensure a sealed area for fumigation. The gases are sprayed inside the area and then left to work for a period. The amount of time will depend on the substance that’s used.
There are DIY fumigation options available such as insecticide ‘bombs’. These can be successful for small infestations, but for large or persistent pest infestations an expert pest control company will be best placed to survey the situation and execute the fumigation. Fumigation can be dangerous as it involves releasing large amounts of toxic gas into a contained area and so should only be carried out by trained professionals.

Bacup is a town in Lancashire, England, in the South Pennines close to Lancashire’s border with West Yorkshire. The town is within the Forest of Rossendale and the upper Irwell Valley, 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometres) east of Rawtenstall, 6.4 miles (10.3 km) north of Rochdale, and 21 miles (34 km) to the east of Preston. Based on the 2011 Census, Bacup has a permanent resident population of about 13323 inhabitants. Bacup was established as a settlement following the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain in the Early Middle Ages. For centuries, it was a modest and obscure centre of domestic flannel and woollen cloth manufacturing, and lots of the original weavers’ cottages survive as listed buildings. After the Industrial Revolution, Bacup became a mill town, expanding around the now covered bridge which crosses the River Irwell and the North-South / East-West crossroad at its centre. Throughout that time, its landscape became dominated by unique and substantially sized rectangular woollen and cotton mills. Bacup acquired a charter of incorporation in 1882, which gave it municipal borough status and its own elected town government, comprising a mayor, aldermen and councillors to oversee local affairs. In the late 20th century, Bacup became a part of the borough of Rossendale. Bacup’s historic character, culture and festivities have aided the town’s suburbanisation and redevelopment as a more cosmopolitan commuter town for Manchester and other North West towns and cities. Nonetheless, English Heritage has proclaimed Bacup as the best preserved cotton town in England, and its town centre is named as a conservation area for its unique architectural qualities.
