Woodworms are not very common in the United Kingdom, but an infestation can be very destructive. Woodworm refers to the larvae stage of several different species of beetle, the most common of which is the Common Furniture Beetle. These pest insects lay their eggs inside of damp or rotten wood. When these eggs hatch, small larvae begin to eat the wood around them, which is what causes the holes in wood. The exit holes are produced as the larvae transforms into an adult beetle which then leaves the wood. The beetles are capable of flying and will generally leave the area to breed. However, they may return to lay eggs. In extreme conditions, these insects can damage structural components of a building which can have severe effects.

Signs of a woodworm infestation include cracking noises coming from wood in your house or furniture, as well as the visual indications which are the exit holes found in wood and wood dust often found beneath infested wood. Woodworm infestations should be treated by skilled pest control professionals. It might also be necessary to have a structural survey carried out as woodworms are usually an indicator of damp. Even if the woodworms have not caused serious damage themselves, the damp or rotten wood that they live in could cause a structural problem in the building.

Woodworm treatment is reasonably straightforward once the affected area has been properly located. The wood can be coated with a liquid or lacquer that will stop any larvae inside from exiting and suffocate them, or for more considerable infestations fumigation is often used to ensure that the pests are successfully controlled.

Fulham is a district within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham in southwest London. It is 3.7 miles south-west from Charing Cross, making it an Inner London district. It’s on the north bank of the River Thames, in between Hammersmith and Kensington and Chelsea, facing Putney and Barnes. Formerly, it was a parish within the county of Middlesex. It’s identified in the London Plan as on the list of 35 major centres in Greater London.

Fulham’s reputation of industrial enterprise extends back to the 15th century, with its Mill at Millshot on the south side of what’s now Fulham Palace Road. There was also a pottery, tapestry-weaving, paper-making and brewing industry during the 17th and eighteenth centuries in the area of what is now referred to as Fulham High Street. The next 2 centuries were recognized for power production, transportation, the automotive industry, food production and laundries.

For the first part of the twentieth century, Fulham remained typically working class with pockets of wealth at the North End, along the top of Lillie Road and New King’s Road. Especially rich places were Parsons Green, Eel Brook Common, South Park and the location around the Hurlingham Club. The area attracted waves of immigration, and swift changes meant that there was poverty – Charles Dickens and Charles Booth noted this, and there were poorhouses that attracted benefactors.

Nowadays, Fulham is rated among the most highly-priced parts of London and the UK overall. The typical sale price of all property in 2007 was £639,973 – and is most likely to be substantially more now.
