There are a wide array of species of rodents and many of these are regarded as being pests in the United Kingdom. The most widespread rodent pests are rats and mice, but squirrels and voles are also found in the UK. The method of pest control for these animals will vary, but rats and mice are generally managed using similar methods, making adjustments to account for the difference in proportions between the species. Rodents cause significant issues if an infestation is allowed to grow too large. Due to the rapid rate of breeding, rodent populations can grow very quickly.

Rodents in structures will cause problems if left uncontrolled, and the assistance of professional pest control companies should be sought quickly. Rodents spread diseases and can contaminate foodstuffs if allowed to travel into kitchens or other areas of the home. They might also gnaw through electrical wiring or structural elements of the building, creating fire risks or even harm to the building frame.

There are a number of methods of controlling rodent pests. Live capture or snap traps can be utilised, or poisoned baits can be laid. Any pest control method must be performed together with deterrent methods and access prevention to ensure that the pest control is effective. This can include blocking up access holes into buildings, as well as guaranteeing there are no food sources for the rodents to eat. Qualified pest control companies can survey the building and locate areas where deterrent measures and access blocking should be utilised.

The London Borough of Hackney is a north east London Borough inside Inner London in the UK. Southern and eastern parts of the borough are popularly, but unofficially, regarded as being part of east London, with northern and western areas regarded to belong to north London. The London Plan, issued by the Greater London Authority, assigns whole boroughs to sub-regions for statutory monitoring, engagement and resource allocation purposes. The latest 2011 iteration of this program assigns Hackney towards the ‘East’ sub-region, even though the 2008 and 2004 versions assigned the borough to ‘North’ and ‘East’ sub-regions respectively.

Hackney is bounded by Islington towards the west, Haringey to the north, Waltham Forest towards the north-east, Newham to the east, Tower Hamlets to the south-east and the City of London towards the south-west. It covers a total area of 7.36 square miles. In line with population estimates from 2014, the borough features a permanent population of around 263150 inhabitants. Much of Hackney retains an inner-city character, but in such locations as Dalston big housing estates have been joined by newly created gated communities. In South Hackney, near Victoria Park, terraced Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian housing still survives.

To the east is the big open space of Hackney Marshes and the districts of Hackney Wick and Homerton. Light industries inside the area around the River Lea employ over 3000 personnel. Some of the area was used for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
