Fumigation is an approach used to deal with severe pest infestations. It can be disruptive to homes and businesses so is often only used as a final resort where an infestation is especially prolonged and other techniques for control have been ineffective. Fumigation is effective at controlling a variety of pests, it is usually used for fleas, cockroaches and other crawling or flying insects.

There is an array of chemicals available for fumigation, and a range of methods used for spraying. In recent years, several fumigation chemicals have been banned because of the high risk of causing pollution to the atmosphere. Fumigation can be dangerous as it involves releasing large amounts of toxic gas into a contained area and so should only be completed by trained specialists.
