Fumigation is an approach used to manage serious pest infestations. It can be disruptive to homes and businesses so is commonly only used as a last resort where an infestation is particularly persistent and other strategies of control have been unsuccesful. Fumigation is effective at managing a number of pests, it is usually used for fleas, cockroaches and other crawling or flying insects.

Fumigation functions by sealing a building or room and then using an aerosol or fogger to spray the area with poison fumes. This heavily saturates the area with a toxic gas that kills the pests inside. For smaller areas, the room can be enclosed at entrances such as doors and windows and then sprayed. For bigger properties, the building will either be covered or wrapped in a tent to ensure a closed area for fumigation. The gases are sprayed inside the region and then left to work for a period of time. The amount of time will depend on the chemical that’s used.

There are DIY fumigation options available such as insecticide ‘bombs’. These can be successful for small infestations, but for large or continual pest infestations a qualified pest control company will be best placed to survey the problem and accomplish the fumigation. Fumigation can be dangerous as it involves releasing large amounts of toxic gas into a contained area and so should only be performed by trained professionals.
