Hornets are not a frequent pest in the United Kingdom. However, they can cause issues in a few locations, and their large size and potent sting makes them hazardous to humans, especially when they can be found in large numbers.

Hornets can be tough to differentiate from wasps. The most clear indication is that hornets are social and live in large nests while wasps tend to be solitary. This means that if you discover a large number of the insects, they could be hornets. Small numbers of hornets can be managed on a DIY basis using spray insecticide carefully. However, this is dangerous due to the sting of the hornet. Hornets can sting numerous times without dying and their stings can cause allergic reactions in many people. These stings can be deadly in extreme cases.

For severe infestations or in circumstances where the nest is inaccessible the services of an expert pest control company should be sought. These companies have access to professional class insecticides which are extremely effective on hornets. These insecticides may be delivered either by spray, a liquid application or in dust form. All of these methods will leave some residual effect meaning any hornets which were not present at the time of the first application will be wiped out when they return to the nest. Pest control companies will also be able to eliminate the nest, which will stop hornets trying to recolonise it.

Amersham is a market town and civil parish within the Chiltern district in the English county of Buckinghamshire. It is in the Chiltern Hills, 27 miles northwest of London, 15 miles from Aylesbury and 13 miles from High Wycombe. It forms part of the London commuter belt as a result of its proximity to London. There’s a chalk stream that runs via the town, though it frequently dries up all through the year. The river is located in a sizeable valley that’s larger than is possible for the River Misbourne to reduce, which means that it is a misfit stream. The origins of the town can be dated back to a time prior to the Anglo-Saxon period, and it’s referred to in the Domesday Book of 1086. In 1200, the Earl of Essex was granted a charter for Amersham, which permitted for the hosting of a market on Fridays in addition to a fair in September. A further charter, obtained in 1613, changed the market day to Tuesday and established a statute fair on 19th September. Up until the coming of the Metropolitan Railway in 1892, the area of the town currently known as Amersham on the Hill was referred to as Amersham Common. From this date, the town started expanding. There are numerous parks open to members of the public for sporting and recreational activities. The town is also home to Amersham Town F.C., who play at Spratley’s Meadow in Old Amersham. Amersham posesses a Grade II listed building, ‘High and Over House’, which was made with an art deco style by the architect Amyas Connell in 1931.
