Drain flies are a common pest insect in the UK. Drain flies lay their eggs in drains, sewers and other standing water. They breed very quickly, which means if you see a handful of adult flies there is likely substantially more eggs. Adult flies will fly out of drains and ordinarily die quickly, but they can become a nuisance inside houses. They don’t usually spread diseases but could contaminate food products.

Drain flies can be identified by their small size and dark colour. They are covered in hair which gives them a fluffy appearance, and they also have sizeable wings that they fold above themselves when not in use. Drain flies can be easily confused with fruit flies or other species of flies. Precise identification and location is key to a successful treatment.

If you suspect you have a drain fly infestation, you can test drains by half covering them with a bit of tape. Leave this for about four days. If you find flies stuck on the tape then the drain is infested. The most effective way to control a drain fly infestation is to eradicate their breeding areas. They like to breed on organic matter that’s caught in clogged drains, and so complete cleaning of drains is a successful way to eliminate drain flies. However, proper cleaning of pipes can be quite unpleasant. Expert pest control companies will be able to identify and locate a drain fly infestation and conduct an effective treatment to manage the pests.

Chathill is a village in Northumberland, in England. It is positioned about 9 miles (14 km) north of Alnwick and three miles (5 km) inland from the North Sea coast. Chathill is in the parliamentary constituency of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The village features a permanent population of under 10000 inhabitants. It is served by Chathill railway station. The station also serves the nearby villages of Seahouses, Embleton, Bamburgh and Belford. Although situated on the East Coast Main Line, the station is served by just two arrivals and departures, Mondays to Saturdays, delivering commuting links to and from Newcastle upon Tyne. The station was for many years served by loco-hauled stopping trains between Newcastle, Berwick-upon-Tweed & Edinburgh Waverley (the British Rail timetable for 1982 had four departures each way from here), however these were reduced in frequency and, therefore, curtailed at Berwick by BR at the latter end of the 1980s and subsequently withdrawn altogether north of Chathill after the introduction of electric working on the ECML in 1991. Chathill is known as being home to Preston Pele Tower, which was built between 1392 and 1399. One of its former owners was Sir Guiscard Harbottle of Beamish, who was killed at the Battle of Flodden, the conflict involving the Kingdom of England and Scotland, who was also an ancestor of Diana, Princess of Wales. The tower features a clock, which was installed in 1864, and it features mechanisms comparable to Big Ben.
