Drain flies are a widespread pest insect in the United Kingdom. Drain flies lay their eggs in drains, sewers and other standing water. They breed rapidly, which means if you see a couple of adult flies there is likely a lot more eggs. Adult flies will fly out of drains and generally die quickly, but they can become a nuisance inside houses. They do not usually carry diseases but could contaminate food.
Drain flies can be recognised by their tiny size and dark colour. They are covered in hair which gives them a fluffy appearance, and they have sizeable wings that they fold above themselves when not in use. Drain flies can be easily confused with fruit flies or other species of flies. Correct identification and location is key to an effective treatment.
If you believe you have a drain fly infestation, you can test drains by half covering them with a piece of tape. Leave this for about 4 days. If you find flies stuck on the tape then the drain is infested. The best way to control a drain fly infestation is to get rid of their breeding areas. They prefer to breed on organic matter that’s caught in clogged drains, and so comprehensive cleaning of drains is a successful way to remove drain flies. However, proper cleaning of pipes can be extremely unpleasant. Specialist pest control companies can identify and locate a drain fly infestation and execute an effective treatment to regulate the pests.

Buckhurst Hill is an affluent suburban town in Essex . Positioned adjacent to the northern boundary of Greater London, it forms a part of the Greater London Urban Area. It’s to the west of Essex, approximately 10 miles (17 km) northeast of Charing Cross and nearby to the boundary with the London Borough of Redbridge. Parts of Epping Forest are in Buckhurst Hill mixed with residential areas. The nearest areas are Chigwell, Chingford, Loughton and Woodford. In accordance with the 2011 Census, the town features a permanent population of around 11,400 inhabitants. The first historical record of Buckhurst Hill is in 1135, when reference was made to ‘La Bocherste’, becoming in later years ‘Bucket Hill’, originally meaning a hill with lots of beech trees. It lay in Epping Forest and included only a few scattered homes along the old road from Woodford to Loughton. Ahead of the construction of the railways, Buckhurst Hill was on the stage coach route between London and Cambridge, Norwich, Bury St Edmunds and Dunmow. Traditionally it was a part of the parish of Chigwell; there was no road which connected the 2 communities and so as to get to church, residents had to ford the River Roding at Woodford. The opening of Buckhurst Hill Station in 1856 led to a rapid expansion in the population of the area, with approximately six hundred new homes being constructed near the station by 1871. The town is also home to Buckhurst Hill Football Club and Buckhurst Hill Cricket Club.
