Fumigation is a technique used to manage serious pest infestations. It can be disruptive to homes and businesses so is often only used as a last resort where an infestation is especially prolonged and other methods of control have been ineffective. Fumigation is effective at managing a range of pests, it is usually used for fleas, cockroaches and other crawling or flying insects.

Fumigation operates by sealing a building or room and then using an aerosol or fogger to spray the area with poison fumes. This heavily saturates the area with a toxic gas that kills the pests inside. For smaller areas, the room can be closed at entryways such as windows and doors and then sprayed. For larger buildings, the building will either be sealed or wrapped in a tent to ensure a covered area for fumigation. The gases are sprayed inside the region and then left to work for a period. The amount of time will depend on the chemical that’s used.

There are DIY fumigation options available such as insecticide ‘bombs’. These can be successful for small infestations, but for large or continual pest infestations an expert pest control company will be best placed to survey the situation and execute the fumigation. Fumigation can be dangerous as it involves releasing huge amounts of toxic gas into a contained area and so should only be completed by trained specialists.
